About this weave tradition
Patola is the double ikat of Patan: warp and weft are both tied and dyed to the finished design before weaving begins, then aligned on the loom so the pattern resolves as the cloth grows. Because the pattern exists in the yarn rather than on the surface, the cloth reads the same from both faces.
Single-ikat and printed cloths are frequently sold under the same word. The distinction is structural and worth insisting on.
