Weave tradition
Kanjivaram
Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu
Mulberry silk in which body and border are woven separately and interlocked at the join.
A Kanjivaram is woven in mulberry silk, and its structural signature is the way the body and the contrast border are made: on separate warps, then interlocked at the join. That interlock is why the border does not tear away from the body, and why you can usually find a visible line where the two meet.
The weight comes from the silk and from the zari, which in the finest pieces is a silver thread gilded with gold and wound on silk. A saree that feels light for its price is telling you something about its zari.
