Weave tradition
Jamdani
West Bengal (and Dhaka, Bangladesh)
A discontinuous supplementary weft placed by hand, thread by thread, as the cloth is woven.
Jamdani is not a pattern; it is a method. The motif is built by inserting a discontinuous supplementary weft by hand as the cloth is woven, thread by thread, without a jacquard or a punch card. There is no float on the reverse because there is nothing carried across — each motif is finished where it sits.
It is among the slowest surviving handloom techniques. A closely worked jamdani can take months, which is the entire explanation for the price.
