Weave tradition
Chanderi
Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh
A sheer, lightly glossy cloth traditionally woven with a silk warp and a cotton weft.
Chanderi's characteristic transparency comes from the yarn rather than from any finishing: the traditional cloth uses a silk warp and a cotton weft, and historically an unbleached, un-degummed yarn that keeps a faint sheen. Modern Chanderi is woven in silk-cotton, pure silk and pure cotton, so the fibre must be stated separately from the tradition.
